Tenor Taka Komagata brightens international classical music with his sincere presence and vibrant vocal style. He performs “with earnest gusto” (The Boston Globe) and has been praised for “believable and stunning” character portrayals (Los Angeles Times). His colorful voice and genuine expressions bring new life to his repertoire.
In the 2026/27 season, Taka returns to Hawai’i Opera Theatre to perform Delbert Grady/Stuart Ullman in Paul Moravec’s The Shining and Spoletta in Tosca. He also makes his company debut with Gulfshore Opera, performing Goro in Madama Butterfly, and returns to the role of Monkey/Rat in Big Swim, a co-production of Houston Grand Opera and Asia Society Texas. He also appears in a recital as part of the Asian Poetry Project series with Wear Yellow Proudly.
Mr. Komagata’s 2025/26 season highlights include the tenor solo in Britten’s Spring Symphony with Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kazushi Ono, his role debut as Monkey/Rat in Big Swim, his company debut as Goro in Madama Butterfly with Opera Grand Rapids, and his Carnegie Hall debut performing the tenor solo in Terre Johnson’s Te Deum with New England Symphonic Ensemble.
His recent seasons include a role debut as Guang, the leading role in Stuck Elevator, a comic-rap-scrap-metal opera, and Nemorino in The Elixir of Love with Hawai’i Opera Theatre; company debuts with Opera Grand Rapids, Pacific Opera Project, Opera in Williamsburg, and Savannah VOICE Festival, performing Goro in Madama Butterfly. He presented his recital series in Japan at Galba Hall Tokyo and Meguro Persimmon Hall, and at Secret Garden in Hawaii. He also performed the tenor solo in Mozart’s Requiem with MidAmerica Productions conducted by Peter Tiboris. In the winter of 2020, he made his Japan debut, performing the leading male role in an original Christmas musical, I’ll Be Home for Christmas, at Asakusa Kyugeki Theater in Tokyo.
As a former Young Artist at Opera Maine and Hawai‘i Opera Theatre's Mae Z. Orvis Opera Studio, he appeared in Rossini’s Cenerentola, Gareth Williams’s Rocking Horse Winner, Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, and Verdi’s Aida.
Mr. Komagata is passionate about contemporary music and working with renowned living composers. He performed in Te Deum by Terre Johnson, Big Swim by Meilina Tsui, Stuck Elevator by Byron Au Yong, Rocking Horse Winner by Gareth Williams, Kamalehua: The Sheltering Tree by Herb Mahelona, Ellis by Gabriele Vanoni, The Secret Garden by Nolan Gasser, The Séance by Timothy Peterson, and The Fall of the House of Usher by Felix Jarrar.
Additional operatic credits include Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, King Kasper in Amahl and the Night Visitors, Parpignol in La Bohème, Baron Zsupán in Countess Maritza, the title role in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg, Charles in The Finishing School by Franz von Suppe, Le Surintendant des plaisirs in Cendrillon, and Federico in L’amico Fritz.
Mr. Komagata co-founded Balcony Series, an artistic troupe delivering timeless classical compositions to unsuspecting listeners through impromptu performances. The series builds spontaneous bridges between everyday life and the experience of classical music by catering to audiences who would otherwise not seek out the genre.
Taka holds a Graduate Performance Diploma in Opera Performance and a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College, a Certificate of Merit in Voice from New England Conservatory of Music, and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Hawaii Pacific University. He is a prize winner of the Basel International Vocal Competition, the Yokohama International Music Competition, and the Tokyo Summit Music Competition.
